Reflections on David

  • The Diocesan House Of Retreat The Street CM3 1HA United Kingdom (map)

- focussing on the OT material relating to David, discovering ways in which it is relevant for us in today's world

Led by Revd Dr Janet E Tollington. The weekend will be suitable for adults, lay or ordained, who are interested in exploring biblical material with open minds, wanting to discover fresh and perhaps unexpected insights into ancient texts. People from any denomination or church tradition are welcome.

Janet's style is always interactive and each of the main sessions will include close engagement with specific Biblical passages looking at some aspect of David; and then be followed by some free time. This can be used however participants want – alone, or to continue discussion with her, or with some of their number, to enjoy Pleshey etc.

The introductory session on the Friday evening will provide enough information to set the scene, so that everyone will feel comfortable with where we are going over the weekend. Likewise there will be a short final session to round everything off.

Participants need to bring a copy of the Bible with them and they will probably find it easier to have a printed version (rather than on their phones or tablets!) so that it is easy to flip backwards and forwards to compare passages in different books. It won’t matter which version they bring – different translations can be useful.

The Revd Dr Janet E Tollington retired from her role as Director of Old Testament Studies at Westminster College, Cambridge in 2016 but she remains active as a teacher within the university and across the church. She continues to serve the United Reformed Church at national and local level wearing several different hats! She is a passionate ecumenist and enjoys working with groups of people who want to explore more about the Old Testament, whether or not they have done much biblical study before.
